Expressing Your Sympathy With Flowers

Flowers are one of the most thoughtful things you can give a person when they're going through a hard time. Whether facing an illness, a personal challenge, or the death of a loved one, a floral gift says "I care" without any extra stipulations.

Traditional sympathy flowers are usually white or pale colors, such as pale peach or pink. Some of the more popular arrangements for sympathy include white lilies, gladioli, snapdragons, or roses. Accents of seed eucalyptus also contribute to a thoughtful, gentle arrangement.

Other options for sympathy arrangements go beyond the traditional bouquet and include wreaths and sprays of flowers that can be displayed on standing easels. Decorative baskets with flowers are also an appropriate choice for sympathy gifts.

When ordering a sympathy arrangement, be sure to include a vase with the order. Alternately, you may want to include a flower stand. Either way, you don't want the person on the receiving end of the arrangement to be put to any trouble by having to find a way to store and display the arrangement.

It's also a nice touch to include a small card with any sympathy arrangement you send. Many florists offer pre-printed messages with austere designs and lines like, "I'm thinking of you" or "I'm sorry for your loss." When it comes to writing anything additional on the card, the rule of thumb is to keep messages short and simple, gently acknowledging the sad event.

Sympathy arrangements are a tasteful way to offer your commiseration or condolences to anyone going through a hard time.
