Spring has sprung! It’s a great time of year to brighten your home with flowers. We here at KaBloom know that it’s sometimes hard to make sure that the flowers stay as beautiful and as fresh as when you first get them. But, we want your flowers to last as long as possible, so here’s a few simple steps to help you get the most out of your flowers. A gift like these is too important and special to let them go to waste!
One of the most important things to take into account when choosing the right place for your flowers is its location. In general, flowers thrive best in a cooler location, but you also have to make sure that the flowers are not in an area that is too hot or too cold. They will be happiest between 65 degrees to 72 degrees. Extreme temperatures, or extreme changes in temperature, will cause the flower to dry out quickly, making the once-beautiful flowers wilt. The same thing can happen if flowers are placed on a windowsill, where they will be subjected to direct sunlight that can also cause them to wilt. If they are placed near a window for any period of time, make sure the flower’s petals are not touching the glass, for the temperature will cause damage to the flower. Also, it makes sense to keep them away from cigarette smoke, but also keep it away from fruit, because fruit releases small amounts of ethylene
When the flower arrive, make sure you cut between ¾” and 1” off of the stems, at an angle if possible, because it will help with the water intake. Use a sharp knife or floral scissors to ensure a smooth cut that won’t crush the flower’s water vessels. As the days go by, check the water level to make sure that the flowers have enough. When the water becomes cloudy, it is time to change the water to protect the flowers from bacteria and help the flowers thrive. You can also cut the stems after a couple days to help the water continue to circulate through the stems. As the flowers continue to blossom, be sure to remove any dead foliage from the stems, which will help the flowers thrive but also will make the arrangement appear better!
